Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
