The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being considered a risk of fleeing
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz InĂĄcio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
