Trump Administration to Distribute Half Food Stamp Benefits in November

The US administration revealed it would offer reduced relief to countless nutritional assistance recipients as the protracted budget impasse neared a record-breaking duration.

Funding Decrease Details

Amid mounting concern for the approximately 42 million people enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Department of Agriculture confirmed it would use reserve funds to maintain payments, albeit at merely 50% of the standard amount participants typically get.

Funding for the assistance formally expired on the weekend due to the federal closure, now in its 34th day with no clear signal of completion.

Judicial Actions

The decision came in a legal document after prior refusals to issue critical funding on purported legal grounds. A judicial authority had ruled the leadership could not deny program funds because of the shutdown.

Following the legal directive, the president announced it would be "pleased" to provide emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Administrators suggested that funds could commence by midweek, but emphasized the need for more guidance from the courts on how to properly transfer money for SNAP support.

  • Various local governments have indicated it will take multiple days or even weeks to distribute funds to needy recipients.
  • Crowds have been reported at charities throughout the country.
  • In several states, stadium car parks were converted into assistance centers.

Local Crisis Responses

Various authorities, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared crisis measures to supply interim money for support. However, these allocations were expected to be a fraction of the normal federal funding.

The federal costs for SNAP reach approximately $8 billion each month across the United States.
