Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
